Negligent Security? Our Legal Take: Delivery Driver, 3 Others Injured in Newport News Hotel Shooting

Did negligent security contribute to this hotel shooting? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victims may have a legal avenue for justice and a claim for compensation.

Local News

Four people were reportedly injured in a shooting at the Magnuson Hotel in Newport News Sunday morning, August 14, 2016.

According to The Virginian-Pilot, “around 12:15 a.m. police responded to a report of a shooting inside the Magnuson Hotel at 1000 Omni Blvd. Officers found a woman on the first floor who had a non-life threatening gunshot wound. She was taken to a local hospital.” The victim was apparently “delivering pizza to a room on the first floor when gunfire broke out.”

Three other victims, a man and two women, were reportedly transported to the hospital by private vehicle with injuries. Their current conditions have not been released.

Police have not yet identified a suspect or motive in the shooting. The hotel was apparently the subject of a prior shooting investigation arising from “gunshots in the parking lot” in October 2013, per News 3 reports.

Our Legal Take

Hotel guests and staff have a right to feel safe and secure while on premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the hotel and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain entry to the property? What hotel security measures, such as gated and ID-controlled entry, desk staff, security patrols, and surveillance cameras, were in place to protect hotel guests and visitos at the time of the shooting?
  • Was the hotel owner or management aware of any prior incidents of crime or violence on or near property?  If so, were additional security precautions implemented by the property owner to deter crime?

Generally, hotel owners are required to protect all guests legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the hotel management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victims may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for their injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
