A woman was reportedly robbed at gunpoint outside a “Fuel Center” in Memphis, according to WREG 3. Police told media local “gas stations have become hot spots for these types of crimes.”

“Officers say two teens and a man they’re looking for recently carjacked and beat a 69-year-old at a Whitehaven gas pump,” per WREG 3 reports. “And days before that, police say a man held a woman at gunpoint at a gas pump on South Perkins before taking her car.”

The incidents raise grave questions over gas station security measures. While gas station owners are ultimately responsible for patron safety, Memphis police urge drivers to take precautions at the pump:

  • Don’t keep your valuables in your car.
  • Carry your purse.
  • Don’t leave keys in the ignition.
  • Make sure your doors are locked.
  • Use a towel the same color as your car’s interior to hide belongings if you must keep them in your car.

Could the senseless loss of this young man have been prevented and are justice and compensation available to Mr. McLeod’s family?

Local News

Security measures are in question after 22-year-old Kareem McLeod “was shot in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven Exxon gas station on Clanton Rd. Friday night,” October 19, 2018, according to FOX 46.

Police told WSOCTV 9 emergency responders transported Mr. McLeod to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to fatal injuries. Investigators have not yet identified a suspect and it is unclear whether robbery is considered a motive.

Our Legal Take

Gas station and convenience store patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this unconscionable shooting may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property?
  • What security measures, such as bright lighting, monitored surveillance cameras, clear windows and sight lines, and visible security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect Mr. McLeod at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the gas station owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Kareem McLeod’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.

ParkingLotSafetySign-240x300Shopping center parking lots present inherent security challenges as they frequently occupy a large space with low levels of activity and numerous hiding places for would-be attackers. A recent rash of strip mall violence across the country gives rise to questions of patron safety and security. What are shopping center owners doing to protect their patrons and deter crime?

In October, The News-Press reports, four people were killed and others were injured during two separate Fort Myers shopping center parking lot shootings within two days.

A woman was shot and killed “in the parking lot of a Point Loma Heights shopping center” on October 9th, per San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

“Three people were killed and another person was wounded in a shooting in the parking lot of a North Las Vegas strip mall,” on October 14th, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Victims of Parking Facility Violence: Know Your Rights

Shopping center patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises of the establishment they are visiting, both inside a business and outside in the parking lot. By law, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. For example, should a shopping center owner have knowledge of prior violence on or near property, they have a responsibility to implement additional security precautions to protect patrons and deter such crime. Should a strip mall owner fail in this critical responsibility, they may be held civilly liable for any injuries, sexual assaults or wrongful deaths which occur as a consequence.
