Could a Security Failure Have Contributed to The Tragic Death of Yolanda Dillard?

Local News

An altercation outside the Spinx gas station on White Horse Road reportedly escalated into deadly gunfire Saturday morning, April 8, 2017, claiming the life of 25-year-old Yolanda Dillard.

According to The Greenville News, “deputies responded to reports of an altercation and gunshots around 2 a.m. Saturday at the Spinx Station at 1519 White Horse Road.”

FOX Carolina reports, a “large crowd” had apparently began “fighting inside and outside” the gas station” when the gunfire erupted. Ms. Dillard was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to fatal injuries.

We represent individuals and families who have suffered a tragic loss or injury as a consequence of negligent property security. Our Legal Take

Gas station patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this unconscionable shooting may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions, such as surveillance cameras, security patrols and bright lighting, implemented by the property owner or management to protect patrons?
  • Was the gas station management aware of the reported “large crowd” on property? Were police called to the scene at the start of the initial altercation, prior to violence?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the gas station owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Yolanda Dillard may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims her wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this unconscionable shooting may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunmen gain access to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, bright lighting and security patrols, were in place to protect residents at the time of the shooting?
