Local News

Two fatal Richmond apartment shootings reportedly claimed the lives of 25-year-old Tychelle Johnson and 28-year-old Karriem Brown, only days apart.

According to WTVR News, “[Ms.] Johnson was found shot to death in her apartment on the 1400 block of Jennie Scher Road” Thursday morning, December 1, 2016. Days later, and “just 100 yards away,” Mr. Brown was shot and “found lying in the parking lot” of the “Ashley Oaks Apartments.”

Police are still investigating and do not believe the incidents are related.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure within the community. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the apartment complex and whether this tragic loss of life may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain access to the properties? What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, security patrols, and surveillance cameras, were in place to deter crime at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence in the surrounding area? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the property owners or management to protect residents and guests?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all residents and guests legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owners or management companies failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the families of Ms. Johnson and Mr. Brown may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for their wrongful deaths.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims’ families retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
