Could this senseless loss of life have been prevented and are justice and compensation available to Jamell Shikeem-Shakeya’s family?

Local News

Apartment security measures are in question following the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Jamell Shikeem-Shakeya Wingfield Saturday evening, January 26, 2019.

Greenville police told 7 News, officers “responded to Fleetwood Manor Apartments off Augusta Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of a gunshot victim in the parking lot.”

Mr. Wingfield was transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Police are still searching for suspects and a motive, per Greenville News reports.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property?
  • What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, visible surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect Mr. Wingfield at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Jamell Wingfield’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
