Could the shooting death at a Memphis bar have been prevented and are justice and compensation available to the family of Lacey Odum?
Local News
Gunfire rang out at a Memphis, Tennessee bar early Saturday morning, April 27, 2019, leaving one man dead. According to WREG.com, “one man was shot and killed around 2:30 a.m. outside [a] Bar and Grill on Millbranch Road as he tried to drive away after getting into an argument with someone inside.” The news story reports “[f]amily says that victim’s name was Lacey Odom, and that he had several young children.” Police are searching for suspects according to the media report.
In a past news story from October 2016, Fox13Memphis.com reported on a shooting at this same location.
Our Legal Take
Bar patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.
- Have prior incidents of violence been reported on or near the property?
- Were security measures, such as bright lighting, surveillance cameras, or security personnel, in place to deter crime and protect Mr. Odum and others at the time of the shooting?
- Were any security measures changed or upgraded after any prior incidents of violence?
Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the property owners failed to provide adequate security to protect those on the premises, Lacey Odum’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss.
Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that Lacey Odum’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
