Could the shooting at a North Lauderdale sports bar have been prevented and are justice and compensation available to the victim?

Local News

Gunfire erupted at a North Lauderdale, Florida sports bar early Saturday morning, March 2, 2019, leaving one man injured.  According to WSVN.com, “there was an altercation at Players Sports Bar & Grill, located 5280 N State Road 7, at around 3:30 a.m., Saturday…the gunman opened fire outside of the bar, striking the victim.”  The news story states “crews airlifted the patient to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.”  No suspect has been identified according to the media outlet.

Media reports indicate this may not have been the first shooting incident at this location.  Local10.com reported on an incident from Sept. 13, 2014, and Miami.CBSlocal.com reported on an incident from Oct. 24, 2015.

Our Legal Take

Bar and nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How many prior incidents of violence have been reported on or near property?
  • Did the nightclub do anything to address past violent incidents?
  • Does the nightclub have a protocol to check guests for deadly weapons prior to entering the establishment?
  • What nightclub security measures, such as bright lighting, visible surveillance cameras, and security personnel, were in place to deter crime and protect the victim and others at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the bar owners failed to provide adequate security to protect those on the premises, the victim may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
