As reported by KEZI.com, “OSP officials said they responded shortly before 3 p.m. on April 15 to a two-vehicle fatal motor vehicle crash near milepost 260 on Highway 101 in Coos County.”

According to the report, “[i]nitial investigation determined that a 78-year-old Bandon man was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Highway 101 in a white Mercedes E400 when he nearly collided with a Bandon Police Department patrol vehicle and a civilian passenger vehicle…Authorities said that the police officer turned around to pursue and stop the wrong way driver.”

KCBY.com is reporting, “[w]hile the patrol car was trying to catch up, the Mercedes struck the southbound guardrail and veered back into the southbound lane. The Mercedes then collided head-on with a southbound blue Mazda Mazda3 driven by Mariah Mayfield, 18, of Coquille. Mayfield was [tragically unable to survive her injuries].”

The investigation is ongoing.
