Could this tragic loss have been prevented?

Local News

Gunfire reportedly broke out inside Rehmy’s Bar and Lounge Sunday morning, February 11, 2018, claiming the life of 31-year-old Brent Jackson.

According to The Herald-Dispatch, the shooting occurred “inside Rehmy’s Lounge, 611 5th Ave, at 2:20 a.m.” Mr. Jackson was discovered at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he tragically succumbed to fatal injuries.

The bar owners apparently told WSAZ 3, they are “closing their establishment for public safety concerns…until further notice.”

Our Legal Take

Bar and nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How did a gun gain entry to the property? What security measures, such as weapons screenings, surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to protect patrons and deter crime at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the bar owners failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Brent Jackson may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
