Did negligent security contribute to this Memphis hotel shooting?

Local News

A man was reportedly shot during a robbery at the Budget Host Inn and Suites in Memphis Thursday night, October 4, 2017.

According to Action News 5, a male guest “was robbed and shot” inside a room “on the first floor” of the “Budget Host Inn and Suites.” The victim was transported to Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

This is apparently not the first shooting investigation at the hotel. Action News 5 reports, “a man and woman were shot at the hotel” in June 2016 and a clerk was “hit in the head with a gun” only last month.

Our Legal Take

Hotel guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Were any additional security measures implemented by the hotel owner or management, following media reports of prior violence on property?
  • How did the gunman gain entry to the property? Whaaccess controls, such as gated-entry, surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to protect guests and deter crime at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the hotel owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victim may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
