A shooting at the Paris Inn nightclub and restaurant reportedly claimed the life of one person and left two others injured Saturday, September 10, 2016.

According to WTVR News, the shooting occurred “outside the Paris Inn nightclub and restaurant in Nottoway County…at about 2 a.m.” The club is located on “Cauthorne Street…off Route 460 in Burkeville.”  Media reports indicate “[a]bout 150 people were at Paris Inn when the shooting occurred in the parking lot.” One person apparently succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene. The conditions of the other two victims have not been released.

Our Legal Take

Restaurant and nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure on the property that they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • What parking lot security measures, such as weapons screenings, bright lighting, security patrols, and surveillance cameras, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the owner or management of the property failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the deceased victim’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for wrongful death. Additionally, the other victims of this shooting may pursue legal claims for their injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
