Could this senseless loss of life have been prevented are justice and compensation available to Davontae Grant’s family and the surviving victim?

Gunfire erupted at a Hilton Head apartment complex Sunday night, December 16, 2018, claiming the life of 19-year-old Davontae Grant and leaving one man critically injured.

Police told WSAV 3 News, responding officers discovered Mr. Grant with fatal gunshot wounds “at the Hilton Head Garden Apartments” around 9:30 p.m.

According to The Island Packet, a second man “was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah…in critical condition.” His identity has not been released.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises, and the Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? What security measures, such as gated entry, fencing, bright lighting, monitored surveillance cameras, and visible security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect the victims at the time of the shooting?

Property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Mr. Grant’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss. Additionally, the surviving victim may pursue legal claims for his injuries.
