Did negligent security contribute to the death of this young man and the injury of several others? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victims and their families may have a legal avenue for justice and claims for compensation

Local News

The Roanoke community is reportedly calling for peace after a shooting at Monsters Bar and Grill tragically claimed the life of 26-year-old Jermaine Lynn Black and left several others injured Monday, September 5, 2016.

According to The Roanoke Times, “police are searching for more suspects in a shooting at Monsters Bar and Grill over the weekend that killed [Jermaine Lynn Black] and injured 10 others.”

Family and friends gathered Tuesday to remember Mr. Black in a candlelight vigil. Mourners expressed “sorrow and outrage about [Mr.] Black’s death and the recent violence in Roanoke,” The Roanoke Times reports.

“Since January 2015, police said they have received more than two dozen calls-to-service about Monsters Bar and Grill, including alcohol-related crimes, shots fired and Sunday’s shooting that killed Jermaine Black,” WSLS 10 News reports.

Our Legal Take

Restaurant and nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure on the property that they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the restaurant and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How did a gun get inside the restaurant? What security measures, such as weapons screenings, security patrols and surveillance cameras, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security measures implemented by the restaurant owner to deter crime?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the restaurant owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Jermaine Lynn Black may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for his wrongful death. Additionally, the other victims of this shooting may pursue legal claims for their injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
