Security Failure in parking Lot? Nashville Sports Bar Shooting Claims the life of Justin Lawton

Local News

26-year-old Justin Lawton was reportedly shot and killed outside JC’s Bullseye Sports Bar in Nashville Wednesday, December 14, 2016.

According to FOX 17, Mr. Lawton was sitting in his car “in the parking lot of JC’s Bullseye Sports Bar” when gunfire erupted. Mr. Lawton’s vehicle apparently “rolled through the parking lot into the street where it came to a stop.”

A “white Toyota Corolla” was allegedly seen fleeing the scene. Police have apparently not yet identified a suspect or motive.

Our Legal Take

Bar and parking lot patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided in the parking lot and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • What security measures, such as security patrols, bright lighting and surveillance cameras, were in place to deter crime at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the property owner or management to protect patrons?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the parking lot owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Justin Lawton may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for his wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
