Did negligent security contribute to this shooting at a Largo apartment complex and are justice and compensation available to Marguerite Williams and Chantel Johnson?

LARGO NEWS

Gunfire erupted at a Largo, Florida apartment complex Tuesday night, May 7, 2019, leaving two women seriously injured.  According to Fox13news.com, “Largo police received several calls of shots fired in the area near 601 16th Avenue SE at Whispering Palms Apartments.”  When officers arrived they found two females who were injured by gunfire according to the report.  TampaBay.com is reporting “[o]ne victim, Marguerite Williams, was shot in the head, and the other, Chantel Johnson, was hit in the neck. Both received life threatening injuries…Williams was on life support at a local hospital.”  According to the TampaBay.com news report, “[a]t the time of the shootings, the women were walking to their apartment, located above [the suspects].”

The suspect is in custody and faces three counts of attempted murder in the first degree according to the media reports.

OUR LEGAL TAKE

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the apartment complex and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on the property?
  • Were there any reports of suspicious activity made about the suspect prior to the shooting?
  • What security measures, such as bright lighting, gated-entry, fencing, monitored surveillance cameras, and visible security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect Marguerite Williams and Chantel Johnson at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Marguerite Williams and Chantel Johnson may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that Marguerite Williams and Chantel Johnson retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
