Did negligent security contribute to the shooting of this young woman?

Local News

25-year-old Olanda Brown was reportedly shot and injured during a violent home invasion at the Arbor Glenn apartments in Charlotte Sunday night, December 10, 2017.

According to WBTV 3 News, Ms. Brown fled to her apartment after getting into an altercation with people in a parking lot. The “intruders” apparently then “surrounded her home” and opened fire when she attempted to escape through a second story window. Ms. Brown was transported to the hospital for surgery. Her current condition has not been released.

A concerned apartment resident and mother of five told WBTV there have been “four or five shootings around the area” over the “past three months.” Arbor Glenn was apparently the subject of a shooting investigation in March 2014, per Charlotte Observer reports.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • What additional security measures, such as gated-entry, bright lighting, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were implemented by the complex owner following media reports of prior gun violence on and near property?
  • How did the intruders gain entry to the property? Were any efforts made by apartment management, security or staff to call police during the initial parking lot altercation?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Olanda Brown may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for her injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
