Negligent Security Lapse? Our Legal Take: 32-Year Old Woman Tragically Killed in Memphis Gas Station Shooting

Did negligent security contribute to the tragic death of this young woman? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victim’s family may have a legal avenue for justice and claim for compensation.

Local News

A shooting outside the Roma Mart gas station in Memphis reportedly claimed the life of 32-year-old Royces Givens Wednesday morning, October 19, 2016.

According to LocalMemphis.com, the shooting occurred “shortly before 4:00 a.m….at the Roma Mart gas station at East Mallory and South Lauderdale in south Memphis.” Ms. Givens, a “FedEx employee,” was reportedly shot and killed while “sitting in her car, parked at the gas station.”

Other FedEx employees apparently told media they often stop by the gas station store on their way home from the overnight shift. Police have apparently not yet identified a suspect or motive in the fatal shooting.

Our Legal Take

Gas station patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on premises of the establishment they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm regularly represents victims of negligent security at gas stations, and questions the level of security provided at the gas station and whether this tragic loss of life may have been prevented.

  • What security measures, such as surveillance cameras, bright lighting and security patrols, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?
  • Was the gas station owner aware of any prior incidents of violence on or near the property?  If so, were additional security precautions implemented by the property owner or management to deter crime?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the gas station owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Ms. Givens may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for her wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
