Fatal Security Lapse? Our Legal Take: 1 Killed, 1 Injured in Houston Bar Parking Lot Shooting

Did negligent security contribute to the death of one man and the injury of another? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victims and their families may have a legal avenue for justice and claims for compensation.

Local News

A parking lot shooting outside the Sol Billares Y Deportes bar in Houston reportedly claimed the life of one man and left another injured Monday morning, September 5, 2016.

According to News 2, “[t]he shooting was reported about 6 a.m. at the Sol Billares Y Deportes bar, at 5920 Bellaire Blvd.” Two 27-year-old men were reportedly shot “in the parking lot of the bar.”

Both men were transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital for emergency care, and police are apparently still searching for suspects and a motive.

Our Legal Take

Business and parking lot patrons have a right to feel safe and secure on the property they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided in the parking lot where the shooting occurred and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • What security measures, such as weapons screenings, security patrols, bright lighting, and surveillance cameras, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security measures implemented by the bar owner to deter crime?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the parking lot owner or manager failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victim’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death. Additionally, the other victim of the shooting may pursue claims for his injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
