Local News

20-year-old Kewin Kaewprasit was reportedly shot and killed during a carjacking at the Nottingham Village apartment complex in Houston Monday, December 12, 2016.

According to ABC 13 News, the violent “carjacking happened at the Nottingham Village apartments off Kimberly Lane.” Houston authorities are asking for assistance.  Per ABC 13, “[t]he suspect is driving a black 2015 Nissan Altima four-door vehicle. The license plate number GSK-5233.”

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure within the community. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the apartment complex and whether this tragic loss of life may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain access to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, security patrols, bright lighting, and surveillance cameras, were in place to deter crime at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence in the surrounding area? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the property owners or management to protect residents and guests?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all residents and guests legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owners or management company failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Kewin Kaewprasit may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for his wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.

Local News

Three people were reportedly shot and injured at Gary’s Place bar in Huntington early Friday morning, December 2, 2016.

According to WSAZ News, the triple shooting “happened at Gary’s Place,” a bar which the Huntington City Council ruled “a public nuisance” back in August. Police apparently told media gunfire erupted following a “disagreement between the shooter and the victims.” All three were transported to the hospital with injuries.

“Over the last several years, police have responded to at least 150 calls at Gary’s place,”per WSAZ reports. The Alcohol Beverage Control Administration is now reportedly “suspending their liquor license pending a revocation hearing.”

Our Legal Take

Bar and nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the bar and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • How did a gun gain entry into the nightclub? What security measures, such as weapons screenings, bag checks, security patrols, and surveillance cameras, were in place to deter crime at the time of the shooting?
  • Were any additional security precautions implemented by the property owner or management to protect patrons following reports of prior criminal activity, as reported by WSAZ?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all patrons legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the bar owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victims may seek justice and elect to pursue a legal claim for their injuries.

Two men were reportedly shot and injured during a robbery outside of a Houston Jack in the Box Thursday, December 8, 2016.

According to The Houston Chronicle, the two victims “had walked with two other men from their nearby apartment complex to a Greenspoint-area Jack in the Box restaurant shortly before its 1 a.m. closing time.” “As the four men exited the restaurant with their food, a man walked up, brandished a firearm, and demanded their money and belongings,” per the news report.  The assailant then apparently opened fire, striking two of the four men.

The restaurant was reportedly the subject of previous robbery investigations. Police told The Houston Chronicle, the restaurant “used to stay open 24 hours a day but started closing overnight because it had been robbed so many times.”
